Introduction: • Obesity is still a huge problem in the United States and other countries in the world • Obesity is associated with - Diabetes - Heart Disease - Cancer - Hypertension • Obesity is a concern because adult 18 and older have a body mass index of more than 25kg/m - This percentage has increased from 44.3% to 52.52.6%, since the 1970’s • Because of the increase of obesity in the population , billions of dollars are spent every year on treating illnesses related to this condition • The American College of sports medicine is trying to create programs to help improve and promote obesity prevention, by; - Giving recommendations on safe and effective weight loss - How to keep weight off - Certain foods that can contribute to weight loss - Exercise programs Identifying Adults for Whom Weight Loss is Recommended: • Today it is estimated that 55-60% of adults in the U.S. are overweight • Weight loss is recommended when - The girth of the abdomen is greater than 102cm (40inches)in men - The girth of the abdomen is greater than 88cm ( 35 inches in women Magnitude of Weight Loss Recommendation: • You don’t have to lose a great amount of weight to obtain health benefits • Research concludes that a little can do a lot, as far as health improvement is concerned • Health improvements may include: - decreased blood lipids - decreased blood pressure in a good way - may prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes Dietary Recommendations (you don’t need anything in this section but you need to do the sub-sections below): Energy intake: • Should be adjusted based on body weight Very-low calorie diets: • When energy intake is less than 800kcals • Use of it can greatly increase the magnitude and rate of weight loss Macronutrient composition: • Commercial programs recommend various types of micronutrient compositions for weight loss like; - High Fat - High Protein - High and Low carbohydrate diets * didn’t really understand this part  Exercise Recommendations: (you don’t need anything in this section but you need to do the sub-sections below): Justification for inclusion of exercise for weight loss: • Is another way of adding to energy deficit is to increase energy expenditure though exercise of any kind Exercise prescription considerations for weight loss: • Important to consider the; - amount - intensity - and type of exercise you are doing for weight loss • Need to allow a certain amount of time to progress, and increase as you go • The amount of exercise necessary to improve fitness may be different from the amount necessary to for successful for long-tern weight maintenance.
