Hades and the Underworld: An Ancient Influence
The roots from which many of today’s customs and beliefs stem are those of Greek mythology. ... One such example is that of the story of Hades and the underworld.
When Zeus, the ruler of the gods, and his two brothers, Hades and Poseidon, defeated the Titans, they had to decide over who would rule certain parts of the earth. Poseidon chose the sea, Zeus chose the heavens, and Hades chose the underworld. When most people think of the underworld, they think specifically of Hell. The underworld to the Greeks was where all souls went upon death, whether it be to their idea of Hell, or that of Heaven, the Elysian Fields. Hades, to most would probably represent the devil, when, in all actuality, Hades was a predominantly good natured deity.
