John Updike’s short story “A & P” is a complex story that causes the reader to step into the narrator’s shoes and feel a sense of compassion for him. From the moment the narrator, Sammy, names the character in a bathing suit Queenie it becomes obvious she symbolizes more to him than just a pretty girl walking around a grocery store in a bathing suit.
