Rock Music and Society

Rock Music and Society

Rock music has made an extremely influential impact on society over the course of the last 50 years or so. From cushy lyrics to heavy metal, from Elvis Presley to Metallica, rock music has changed the way artists view music, society and themselves as entertainers. They have developed, broadened and enlightened society on what exactly rock music is. However, is it fair to say that rock music has changed its motives during this time, or has the world changed its expectations of this form of music? Rock and roll has come from a mix of rhythm and blues to country and western and then since evolved. These different forms would actually be better described as different branches of rock music that some might have never thought rock music would turn out to be. During this transition, has this music transformed society, or is it simply a reflection of society? Many will argue that rock music has had a negative impact, while others agree it’s fair to say that rock music is a definition and encouragement to society. This paper will discuss a few different points of view on this subject, as well as trends rock and roll has followed, and places rock and roll is going.

From the very beginning, rock music was designed to attract the younger more liberal generation. The baby boomers where at a point in time where freedom was as essential to the soul as breaking free from the guidelines of life instilled by society. This is where rock music first began to influence lives. Rock music encouraged freedom, expression, personal relationships and the creativity of the mind. ... The music’s hypnotic effect was employed by the costumes and the beat. ... This contributed to the search of society for individualism and liberation.

“Liberation is the theme of rock music. Rock does not express a fixed state at all, but rather the act of throwing of the chains”.
