Palestinian Emergency Government By Saud Abu Ramadan GAZA, Oct. 7 (UPI)--Despite the Palestinan political uproar that attended the declaration of a state of emergency in the Palestinian territories and the formation of a Palestinian emergency government, apparently the action seems to be temporary. Palestinian officials say, however, that steps toward the new emergency government will move forward "as long as the Israeli occupation continues and (Israel) continues its military actions and security measures against the Palestinians." Tuesday Palestinian Authority president Yasser Arafat swore in the new emergency Cabinet. Ahmed Qureia was named as prime minister. Many Palestinian political organizations considered the formation of an emergency government as an attempt to preclude harsh Israeli measures that might follow the suicide bombing attack carried out in a restaurant by a Palestinian woman member of the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, who killed at least 19 Israelis three days ago. Following twin suicide bombing attacks carried out by Hamas on Sept. 10 near Tel Aviv and in Jerusalem killing at least 16 Israelis, the Israeli security cabinet decided to remove Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat because they said he was an obstacle to peace. Many Israeli Cabinet ministers, especially far-right ones, went even further and called for killing Arafat instead of expelling him from the Palestinian territories.
