Violence against women in Pakistan
Analysis report ( January to June 2003)
In Pakistan women have been always a victim of a male dominated system . while in the previous years women have been more aware about their rigths with the help of ngos and education, more women have been seeking divorce from abusive husbands or resroting to counselling or becoming self reliant by attending college and doing jobs. However these number of women are in a small proportion compared to the women who do suffer from the violence. Violence against women in the home and community as well as in the custody of law enforcement officials is on the rise. While a few positive changes have taken place over the last couple of years eg n the past 6 months the government have increases women seats in the national assembly to 33% and have given increased funds to ngos like Shirkat Gah and some others but the government is still failing to protect women over all. ... Other women suffer abuses in silence for years, die violent deaths and get buried in unmarked graves.

„X To analyze the reasons for violence and the age groups and type of women on whom it is inflicted. ...
„X To check if the situation of abused women in pakistan is improving or worsening.
While there are various forms of violence against women, this report discusses six of them : murder, physical violence, rape, suicide, kidnapping and burning. ... The urdu newspapers have reported the majority of cases related to violence against women compared to the English ones. ... Newspaper reports have shown that husbands have murdered their wives in 10 cases related to dispute over property, 13 over money matters, 40 for suspicion of infidelity, 5 for being issueless, 23 for disobedience and 16 for those women seeking separation and divorce.
„X Honour killings related to immoral character of the women have caused hundreds of murders every year majority of which go unreported. ... Women of the family in many cases also support this. ... The flimsiest of suspicions, such as a rumor spread in a village can cause lethal violence. Women are not even given a chance to clear up possible misunderstandings. ... In over 40% of the cases women and girls have been raped and then killed. ...
The victims range from children to teenagers to young women and in a couple of cases very old women. It has been noted that women who are more dependant on family or relatives like widows, divorcees, non working women are more vulnerable and more prone to becoming victims. ... In 3 other cases women were sold by their families as sex slaves for money eg in one such case a man sold his wife for Rs 2500 to buy drugs. 5 cases have reported women being kidnapped and raped and then put in pornographic films. ... Maternal and paternal relatives rape young women. ... In laws rape their women.
