Glory is set in the Civil War, and starts with the battle of Antietam. Captain Shaw is shown leading many men into battle, marching in a straight line towards the enemy. They are massacred and Shaw does not even fight, but gets a very minor wounded and plays dead. The Union soldiers end up winning Antietam. Shaw is then asked to be the colonel for the new 54th regiment, the first all-black regiment. Shaw accepts, and brings along his friend Cabot Forbes to help him lead. Thomas Searles, a free black man and also Shaw’s childhood friend, is the first to volunteer. Many others volunteer to join and the 54th is created. Training of the troops begins. Shaw has a difficult time connecting to his men, who are of a different color.
