Section 9
Urban Cancer
Three Main Causes and Interviews
The Leading Causes of death in the African American community in Cook County ranged from Heart disease to perinatal Conditions. ... I then asked my sister who is 18 years old and goes to school with teenagers and I wanted to know if teenagers are starting to think about future health problems and her answer to the question I asked my father was cancer. I then asked my mother who is 50 years old and at risk for many diseases including heart disease and breast cancer I asked her what does she think is a major health problem in our community and she answered breast cancer because so many black women don’t go get tested or they feel that there are not resources out there for them to be tested for cheap. ...
After looking at the information provided by IPLAN and listening to the community’s perceptions I decided the top heath priority in my community is Cancer. I chose cancer because so many black people in my community are ignorant to the causes of cancer and how to prevent and how it actually attacks the body. I feel that the black community doesn’t really focus much of their time on how serious cancer is because people in my community have so many other things to worry about in their lives like taking care of their children, keeping their jobs etc. Then worrying about cancer. If their was only more education provided that showed the seriousness of cancer and how fast it is attacking black men and especially black women. I chose cancer over heart disease because, yes it is a major problem in the black community but slowly there are resources being provided to help blacks find out about heart disease. But for cancer there is close to nothing. And maybe that’s because scientists and doctors don’t really know much about cancer but there should still be literature and tests provided. There are many risk factors to cancer because there isn’t a lot of info yet for cancer.
