Mexico’s Greatest Man, or Not? The history of Mexico since 1822 has to revolve around Santa Anna’s revolutions. No man dominated Mexican political life like Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. This great man fought more battles than Napoleon and George Washington combined. Santa Anna was elected President of Mexico eleven times! Of course, with an enormous amount of success comes bitter failure. Santa Anna, unfortunately, caused a lot of pain and suffering for Mexico. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was born on February 21, 1794, at Jalapa, Vera Cruz. His parents were Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and Manuela Perez de Lebron. He was a part of the criollo middle class. His father was a subdelegate for the Spanish province of Vera Cruz. Santa Anna grew up with limited schooling. As a young man, Santa Anna worked for a merchant of Vera Cruz. His life would gradually change. Santa Anna was appointed a cadet of Vera Cruz in 1810. He fought and tried to control warring guerrillas and Indian tribes. Interesting enough, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna actually remained loyal to Spain for a number of years and fought against the movement for Mexican independence. Santa Anna’s bravery grew after he received his first wound, an Indian arrow in his left arm, in 1811. The wound marked a turning point in his life. Santa Anna played a leading role in Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain in 1821. This was the first year he appeared for Mexico. Though very young, Santa Anna managed to command and hold possession of Vera Cruz.
