“The Temple” Paula Fredriksen’s chapter entitled “The Temple,” is very thought provoking. However, it took me several re-reads of the chapter to grasp what Fredriksen was talking about. On my fourth time through the chapter it became clear that she was telling a story about Jesus as a young boy. To a Jewish child, Passover can be equated to Christmas or Easter to a Christian child. “Yehohua” was so disappointed with the death of his grandfather this prevented him and his family from attending the “Pesach” in Jerusalem. Ya’akov , his older brother tried to explain to Yehoshua that by tending to their grandfather’s body this had made them tameh -- impure and they had to sit and observe a period of cleansing and mourning. This took seven days and there would be no time to make the journey and fulfill the purification ritual before entering the Temple to bring the Pesach, the Passover sacrifice.
