First of all what is bilingualism? According to the American Heritage Dictionary, bilingualism means “habitual use of two languages, especially in speaking” (131). Therefore, a bilingual person is someone who possesses the ability to communicate in an additional language than his native language when compared with a monolingual, who has the ability to speak in only one language. However, the term bilingualism is divided into many subdivisions; the balanced bilingual and the semi lingual are the most common ones. The difference in those two lies within the proficiency the individual has in speaking a second language. A person is considered to be a balanced bilingual, or also known as an equilingual or ambilingual, when his ability in speaking both languages is equally good.
