Does Anyone Have an Opinion Anymore?

Nat Hentoff’s “Should This Student Have Been Expelled?”, explores whether Doug Hann’s freedom of speech was violated or not. Did Doug Hann, a student at Brown University, deserve exile because he spoke his mind? Hentoff argues that, yes, Doug Hann’s rights were violated. He feels that Hann was banned from the university as a result of his words and not his actions. “On October 18, 1990, Hann, a junior, was celebrating his twenty-first birthday, and in the process had imbibed a considerable amount of spirits” (Hentoff 1). In regards to this issue, Hann has committed no crime. The legal drinking age is twenty-one. While Hann was intoxicated, however, he shouted many obscenities, which to some individuals were offensive.
