We had to start the installation procedures right up from the ground level (i. ... This immensely helped us gain an insight and hands-on experience on the preparation and installation of an R/3 system.
Important milestones were set for the entire R/3 Setup procedure and a relevant Gantt chart was maintained and updated for this purpose. ...

SAP R/3 Client Server Model
For the successful implementation of an SAP R/3 system, a sound knowledge of the Client server model and better understanding if its architecture is essential. Before beginning the installation, we thoroughly comprehended the basic concepts of this model. ...
Since ours was a ¡¥Test & Learn¡¦ installation, all the three layers mentioned above ran together on a single machine. ... The management of the SAP R/3 profile configuration and network becomes relatively easy in this centralized environment.

Requirements Check
Before installing Windows NT Server 4, the hardware requirements and other software resources (Service packs) mentioned before are checked. After these checks, the system is said to be all set for installation.
Installing Windows NT
Windows NT is installed in the following phases :
Phase 0: Pre-Installation
In this phase, setup loads a minimal venison of windows NT into memory, and prompts if you want to perform and installation or an upgrade. ...
The partition in which the SAP R/3 resides must be a NTFS partition because of security reasons and moreover SAP does not run in FAT32.

This set of programs includes administrative tools, utilities and facilities that makes it easier for the network administrator to learn and manage the network, NT and in fact required for the SAP installation. It also enables the administrator to monitor and start or stop the R/3 system and instances centrally, from a single location. This is a prerequisite for further installation steps.
From SAP Kernel CD, under the folder NT386MMCimmc.exe is selected to begin installation and setup program will install the necessary programs/files.
DLL - Dynamic Link Libraries
These files are required for installation of SAP. ... exe on the SAP Kernel CD. ... This is to avoid conflicts that may occur between the NT file cache and the R/3 programs in memory. ...
Choosing R/3 Name
We then must choose an R/3 system name, as we will be installing a central instance in the R/3 Setup. ...
Preparing Transport Host
We must then prepare the Transport Host as this controls the function of importing or exporting of files between the current R/3 system and other systems. ... To enable the installation tool R3SETUP to configure our system to recognize our transport host we had to assign the alias SAPTRANSHOST to our transport host and create a transport directory, notably usrsap rans. ...

„Ï Make sure you have additional 600 MB free disk space for accessing 2 EXPORT CD contents which is required for installation.
„Ï Do not run any other programs while running R/3 setup.
Grant User Rights
The person performing the installation needs certain rights that authorize him to perform
the steps necessary for the installation. The rights required depend on the type of installation that is to be performed. This can be either a domain or a local installation.
As we performed local installation where R/3 central instance and database are installed on a single host without any further application servers, the SAP specific groups and user accounts are stored locally on this host. A user that performs a local installation needs to have local administrator rights for the central instance host.
R/3 Setup Tool
SAP R/3 installation suite comes with a setup tool which automates the setup process according to the user¡¦s preference. R/3 Setup tool is installed by running R3SETP. ...
When all the required information, R3SETUP performs the following actions:
„Ï Copies all the files required for the installation of R/3 components to the installation directory. ...
„Ï Adds options to the NT Programs menu that enable you to start the installation of different R/3 System components. For example, R3 Setup- Central Instance is added to start the installation of a central instance.
„Ï Assigns the rights necessary for performing an installation to the user that is installing the R3SETUP tool.
When the installation of R3SETUP files to your hard disk has been completed, a window appears instructing you either to log off or to reboot your system. ...
Installing an instance
An R/3 instance has to be installed on every host that functions as a server within the R/3 environment. An R/3 central system can be any one of the following
„Ï Central Instance with a database on same host
„Ï Central Instance and database on different host
„Ï Dialog Instance host
Our instance is that of a Central instance with database on the same host.
Preparing the Installation of an Instance
Prior to R/3 Setup Three export CD contents are copied on to the hard drive, as R3SETUP must be able to access these simultaneously during installation.
From the SAP Kernel CD R3setup.bat program was started where we specified the R/3 system name: VAP, Directory on the hard disk where the R/3 Setup files are to be copied, and the instance number which in our case was 00.
When the above information is entered, R/3 Setup performs the following actions. It copies all the files required for the installation of R/3 components, including R3SETUP, the INSTGUI and the command files. It then adds options to the NT Programs menu enabling you to start the installation of different R/3 system components and it assigns the rights to the user to install R3 using the R3SETUP tool.
To continue with the installation, R3SETUP from the NT Programs menu is selected the option SAP R/3 Setup ¡V Central and Database Instance. ...
The rest of R/3 installation is completed in two phases.

It then continues to copy files and expand database files from the 3 CDs. We then used the SAP Kernel CD once again to extract the database-dependent executables.
