The word tundra comes from the word barren or treeless land. But this it not corrects in the low arctic tundra where evergreen trees thrive. Some characteristics of the tundra are:

There are not many types of plant species on the tundra. Most of the plants in the tundra have shallow root systems and can sustain long periods of sunlight and during the winter months very little light during the summer. ... Animals that live in the alpine tundra include the mountain goat, big horned sheep, pika, marmot and the ptarmigan.
The tundra ecosystem is the most sensitive to human damage with little ability to fix it self.
