Sights and Sounds of Human Nature The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects our freedom of speech as they deal with the government. But there is an unclear relationship between the censorship of artwork, literature and music with the First Amendment because legally one can only consider censorship a violation of civil rights when a government entity suppresses it. When a record store does not allow an album to be sold in their store or when an art gallery refuses to have an exhibition shown, the artists or musicians cannot use the First Amendment in defending their rights to be seen or heard. Artwork and music is protected by free speech but their contents are sometimes questioned. When the content of a certain work is considered obscene those who have the power may legally have the right to censor it. These retailers, group, and individuals have every right to not sell something, show something, or provide certain restrictions on transactions, when they consider something obscene. Robert J. Wagman’s, The First Amendment Book, further emphasizes censorship by our own selves as he quotes Jean Otto stating “Many of us , however much we feel personally entitled, are not so sure about the other guy. We are willing to censor books whose ideas or language we don’t like. We would burn records whose words offend us. We would scrap drama and art whose message attacks our sensibilities (Wagman 41). The censorship of artwork, literature, and music by certain groups or individuals brings one to question the integrity of these people in respecting the freedom of speech rights of artists, authors, and musicians. In this essay I will attempt to compare two Gregorio 2 different genres specifically music and photography. This comparison would explore the grounds on why these works were censored and their similarities and differences that led to their respective form of censorship. I will compare the erotic photography of Robert Mapplethorpe with various musicians whose music suggests explicit sexuality. Mapplethorpe’s photography and these songs with explicit sexual lyrics in my opinion express do not portray obscenity but beautiful sights and sounds of human nature.
