Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural weakening of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility, which can easily cause fractures. Osteoporosis occurs when a persons bones become so thin that they can break during normal daily activities such as lifting a heavy object or rolling over in bed. Whether a person develops osteoporosis depends on the thickness of his or her bones early in life, as well as health, diet, and physical activity later in life.
Osteoporosis has been linked to the natural process of aging. ... Although it is best to start these habits during the teen years, adults who follow these habits can prevent or reduce their risk of developing osteoporosis. Other factors that can contribute to osteoporosis include smoking, which reduces estrogen levels; caffeine, which increases calcium loss; excessive use of alcohol, which may be damaging to the skeleton as well as increase the risk of falling; hormone related conditions such as intake of corticosteroid drugs, hyperthyroidism, and diabetes mellitus. Being thin, having a small frame, abnormal absence of menstrual periods, anorexia nervosa, low lifetime calcium intake, current low bone mass, and a family history of osteoporosis also contribute to the development of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is also linked to the decreased production of estrogen in women and testosterone in men.
