Individual Rights are more important than
the Rights of the Community
Individual rights are more important than those of the community. A community contains many different size, colors, and types of people. There are more individual rights throughout the world than community rights.
Individual rights are based on the theory of individualism. According to the World Book Dictionary, individualism is defined as “a theory that individual freedom is as important as the welfare of the community or a group as a whole” (1066). This definition is stating the individual rights are equal to the community rights is some aspects, but they are much more important. The individuals make up the community itself. If the community, for example, was to take away one individual’s rights, then their rights should also be abolished. This is because the Declaration of Independence clearly states “All men are created equal”, and therefore all the rights of every individual apart or not apart of a community are granted with equal rights.
The World Book Dictionary states that a community is “a number of people having common ties or interests, living in the same place and subject to the same laws” (426). Individuals are not always part of a community.
