Paul Cronan started his employment with NET in 1973 as a file clerk, was promoted to service representative, and later to service technician. Paul fell ill in 1985 with symptoms of AIDS Related Complex (ARC), at the time, a relatively misunderstood disease with life-threatening possibilities. ... Cronan disclosed the nature of his illness. ... Cronan that word of his illness had spread throughout the facility in which he worked, and was informed that his life was in danger, should he return to work. ... Cronan’s and NET’s attorneys, an out-of-court settlement was reached which included Mr. Cronan’s return to work at NET. ... Cronan’s return was met with hostility and a walkout by 29 other workers upon his return.
The legal issues present in the case are what today we call “hostile work environment” and violations of the “Americans with Disabilities Act.
