Texas War for Independence

In 1836, the people of Texas declared their independence from Mexico. The unfurling of the Lone Star flag was the last in a chain of events leading to war with Mexico. The series of events leading up to this, increasing immigration to Texas, slavery issues, and the escalation of conflict with the Mexican dictator Santa Anna, made the revolution not unforeseen.
In 1819, the United Stated gave up its claim to Texas in exchange for Florida. ... After Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, it took control of Texas and entered into negotiations for granting a large amount of land to an American man, Stephen Austin, to colonize.
