Remote Sensing Application: Landsat 7 Supplying data users worldwide with low cost, multi-purpose, Land-remote sensing data into the next century MISSION AND APPLICATION: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have joined together in the Landsat Project using the series of satellites developed by NASA to gather Earth resource data. These satellites were originally developed by NASA to launch spacecrafts. The USGS is responsible for maintenance, operations and management of ground data reception, archiving, processing, generation of the product, and distribution. The Landsat Project’s primary goal is to guarantee a collection of Earth imagery that is consistently calibrated. Repetitive acquisition of observations over the Earth’s landmass, coral reefs and coastal boundaries is Landsat’s Global Survey Mission. With this information they have established and execute a strategy for data acquisition that ensures that all data acquired are maximum to support the highly scientific objective of monitoring the Earth’s surfaces, including land, water and environment for any changes. By the end of this decade, the Landsat 7 will have a key role as an earth observing satellite in orbit. Landsat’s combination of high spatial resolution, synoptic coverage, radiometric calibration, and spectral range cannot be matched by any other system. Other amenities that the Landsat Program provides to the user community are greater quantities of digital data quicker and at a lower cost than ever before in the history of the program.
