Also I will be discribing a tragic incident which happened to Ms. Angelou in the early years of her life. I know why the caged bird sings is an auto-biography on Maya Angelou's life. In this book Maya describes her life and all of the many struggles and obsticules she has been through. Maya has faced alot during her early stages of life. Maya angelou went through the early years of her life not knowing who her mother or father was. That is very hard and horrific for anyone to not know who there mother or father is, especially at the age of four. Maya lived in a very small town in Arkansas called Stamps. Her mother and father were having a lot of problems, and they knew that at the time they were not fit to raise Maya or her brother Bailey. So Maya's father decided to ship them off to stamps which was were his mother lived. Maya's grandmother was very spiritual and religous. She kept Maya and Bailey in church every chance she got , they called her Mama. In the very small town Stamps Mama owned the only black owned store. Mama's brother who's name is uncle Willie lived with them. He would try to help mama around the store but he was crippled and could only help but so much. Now that Baily and Maya were living with mama she had them help around the store also. Stamps was a very small and racist town. This story took place in the mid 40's , and at this time african americans were not treated equally. The schools were segregated, and the town was also. For many years african americans were one of the most hated racial groups.
