Everyone knows the story of Oedipus, where he kills his father and marries his mother. ... In Oedipus Rex written by Sophocles, Oedipus is arrogant, impulsive, and irresolute about his past and background.
Arrogance is one of the most apparent character trait of Oedipus. Oedipus thinks so highly of himself that he believes that he is everyone’s leader and even their father, someone a child looks up to. ... Oedipus believes he is the only powerful and wonderful leader of the land even though others help him in ruling the city like Creon. ... His arrogance is clearly demonstrated in scene one during the conversation between Oedipus and Tiresias. When Tiresias is reluctant to share what he knows, Oedipus prods him to tell. ... However, Oedipus rejects Tiresias’s wisdom with an arrogant comment: “You cannot hurt me,/ Nor any other who beholds the light,/ Your life being all one night” (Sophocles 14).
