Veronika Voss

... Fassbinder’s Veronika Voss follows the layout of the classical, traditional Hollywood narrative, all the way to its tragic end.
Set in Munich, 1955, Veronika Voss is a tragic love story. Robert Khron (Hilmar Thate), a sports reporter and the protagonist of the film, meets former UFA film star Veronika Voss (Rosel Zech) on a rainy night in a park. Robert, like most men would be after meeting a film star is fascinated by Voss and her charm, and he wishes to see her again. Discovering her address, he makes an unusual discovery: Voss lives at her doctor’s office. ... Katz (Annemarie Duringer), a neurologist, confirms the fact that Voss has a room in her office as a patient. Robert, mystified, desires to unravel the mystery surrounding Voss’s life, and meets her again in a film studio. Voss is incapable of shooting a small scene and collapses with a nervous breakdown. Robert meets her ex-husband at the film, and learns about Veronika’s life: the end of her glamorous career at the UFA studios, the disintegration of the marriage, her drinking and drug problems, and no more film offers. ... Robert, the protagonist, basically desires Veronika. ... Robert goes to the trouble of finding out where Veronika lives, and his desire begins to take over his life. He basically pushes aside his girlfriend, Henriette (Cornelia Forboes), for Veronika. ... The scene is after Robert tells Henriette that Veronika and he are nothing, that he just lent her 300 marks, and he receives a letter from Veronika with the 300 marks. ... As they begin to climb the stairs, arm in arm, Henriette looks up to see Veronika waiting at their door. Veronika says Robert will be spending the night with her at her house, and they must leave now. Robert’s desire for Veronika takes over the situation, and he leaves with her to go her home.
