In The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, the protagonist of the story, Gregor, leads a very hard, emotional, short life. Gregor lives a life as a “bug” before he ultimately turns into one because of his life of hard work for his family. While his family is copeing with the problem that Gregor is a bug, Gregor still acts very compliant and with great respect even though it is extremely hard for him at times. Gregor ultimately takes the final blow for his family when he dies in the end, which help makes his family better off without him as a problem to deal with. Gregor transforms into what he really already is in his life, a “bug” that is soley controlled by the well being of his family at any expense. Gregor lives a life of tedious work just to pay off the debts of his family because he is obligated to. Gregor is a man who is very concerned for his family even though his father is obligating him to take care of them. Gregor’s obligation to his family is exemplified by his tedious work habits as a salesman. Gregor says, “If I didn’t hold back for my parents’ sake, I would have quit long ago” (Kafka 4). Even though Gregor hates what he does for a living and has to do it every single day of his life he pushes himself to complete his work because it is ultimately helping his family. He also adds, “Once I’ve gotten the money together to pay off my parents’ debt to him- that will probably take another five or six years- I’m going to do it without fail.” (Kafka 4).
