The historical account called Calvin, by Sally Stepanek, is a captivating historical text on the legacy of the theologian John Calvin. The book begins by captivating the reader by telling the exciting story of when Calvin, along with his long time friend Nicolaus Cop, flee Paris after Cop gives a rebellious sermon that Calvin helped write. This sermon was Calvin’s first step of defiance over Catholicism. After the author felt that the readers were interested in what would happen to Calvin, she began to tell why the reform of the Catholic Church began. ... the Reformation progressed, the second generation of Protestants were growing, and one of the most important theologians, Calvin, would arise to carry on Luther’s ideals.
For the title to be Calvin, I realized much of the book was about Martin Luther. At first, I thought it was odd until I realized the importance Luther had on Calvin’s teachings. This became evident in chapter two on the life of John Calvin. The author gives a quick run down on where Calvin was born, the fact that his mother died at the age of three, he was raised by his father Gerard who wanted Calvin to be a clergymen until he himself was excommunicated from the Church, and then wanted him to be a lawyer.
