CULTURAL DYNAMICS Family Families in Spain are tight-knit, traditional groups. The father is most commonly the final say and the mothers run the household, cook dinner, and tend to the children. The normal household in Spain has 1.5 children and a cat. The growth rate in Spain is one of the few in the world that is declining. Most families live in nuclear household, just the mother, father, and unmarried children. Some families live with grandparents and other extended family members as well. It is a custom in Spanish-Europe for the youngest child live with his or her parents through their old age in order to care for them. Marriage The Spaniards have moved away from more “traditional” arranged catholic marriages from feudal times. Couples now marry for mutual attraction and personal benefit, like Americans. They usually marry within their own social classes or they aim for a spouse who is in a higher social class and is better off. Divorce, once though of as taboo in Spanish culture, is legal and permitted. However, it is still regarded to as taboo and will be avoided at almost all costs. Men vs. Women and their Roles Under Castilian Spanish law, women inherit property equal to her brothers. Spouses are also equal under the law. This demonstrates that men and women have equal rights. However, tradition separates the genders. This traditional distinction between men and women is called “machismo” and is the origin of the English translation of the word “macho,” or manly. Women are traditionally homemakers. However, they are occupying jobs and can be found in positions throughout the business world. Despite women’s traditional association with homemaking, the Spanish have long since accepted the independence of women. There was not ever a Spanish feminist rebellion or revolution; women adapted themselves into a position of freedom and equality. Social Classes The highest social class in Spain is the royal family, followed by the nobility, and aristocracy. The royal family is now strictly prominent figureheads.
