Getting Along in Colonial America
The Unredeemed Captive, The Interesting Narritive of the Life of Olaudah Eguiano, and Tom Paine and Revolutionary America all paint different pictures of colonial America and all are written from different view points. Eric Foner and John Demos, authors of Tom Paine and Revolutionary America and The Unredeemed Captive, capture insightful factoids and analysis of the history and the saga of Colonial America. However, Olaudah Equiano is able to give the reader first hand accounts on his struggle and his triumph. The historical accuracy of The Unredeemed Captive may be questioned, however it raises questions about America’s past and still remains a key point in tapping into the mystery of our future.
One of the key elements of The Unredeemed Captive is the fact that Eunice neglects to return to her biological family after being captured and marched to Canada. ... During his travels and adventures in this strange world, he is an average man, as he says “neither a saint, a hero, nor a tyrant,” but an ordinary person forced to lead an extraordinary life.

As well as being an effective argument against slavery, Olaudah Equiano’s narrative is also valuable first-hand historical document. People today would not want to read Equiano’s narrative to study historical events, but instead to understand the different struggles for life that accompanied slave trade.
