Langston Hughes was one of the most important writers and thinkers of the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance is the name given to the period from the end of World War I and through the middle of the 1930's Depression, in which a group of African-American writers produced a large body of literature. Hughes's creative genius was influenced by his life in New York City's Harlem, a primarily African American neighborhood. His literary works helped shape American literature and politics.
