The Purpose of the Journey
I can relate to Chris McCandless in a few ways. I am the same age as Chris was in the book. ... But I the difference between Chris and I is the fact that I knew why I needed to get away. But the question that leaves me hanging is why Chris decided to go on his journey. So the purpose of this paper is to explore if the cause of Chris’s death was the fact that he was totally unprepared or was he poisioned? ... This definition could fit all of the main characters from the novels read, however Chris Mc Candless? ... His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. ... Chris McCandless is arguable whether he is a hero. ... Chris McCandless was one of those unsettled people who chose a challenge to bring himself understanding and peace. ... I don’t think we can even hope to change people’s minds; the issues involved in Chris’ venture are innate in each person. ... I believe Chris McCandless was a courageous man who stuck by his convictions by living his beliefs. ... Chris McCandless lived out his beliefs. ... Admiration and praise was not something McCandless was searching for; his purpose in life and an understanding of himself is what he was looking for. Going out into the wild of Alaska gave McCandless a chance to live his ideals to the fullest. ...
The most common criticism about McCandless is probably what they see is his lack of preparation. ... McCandless had no way of knowing the seeds were poisonous, so he cannot be held at fault for poisoning himself. McCandless is criticized for not bringing a map into Alaska. ...
McCandless’ ideals were not wild fantasy ideas that he created in a state of illusion. ... McCandless saw in these authors what many people have seen, but not adopted. ... This may not be the best way of life, but it’s a way of life that McCandless was in awe of. It is definitely not the easiest way of life, and I think that is one aspect that really attracted McCandless. He enjoyed a challenge; these authors set forth a challenge for McCandless and he accepted. ... Their books were a haven for McCandless when he was in a desperate state. ... While he had some problems with discernment caused by the fantasy world of books, I don’t feel it’s ultimate effect played a major role in McCandless’ demise. ...
McCandless did make some mistakes on his venture. ... This pained McCandless and caused some retribution. McCandless also severed ties because he felt it was the only way he could truly live the life he had envisioned. ... This is probably one reason McCandless was harsh in his actions to severe ties. Knowing his parents would try to find him, McCandless felt he needed to give himself enough time away and not let his parents know his whereabouts. While McCandless was adamant about keeping separated from his family, his journal suggests that he started to question his choice towards the end of his venture. ... Yes, McCandless was cruel in the way he treated his family, but he may have resolved differences if he returned alive. ...
McCandless’ venture into the wilds of Alaska led him on a journey to discover his purpose in life. ... But McCandless did not return. ... The thing I find most fascinating about the story of Chris McCandless is the question of whether I would know who Chris McCandless was if he had survived. ... When I read I this book I was infuriated with Chris McCandless. ... This is what Chris lacked. ... I honestly felt that Chris was a coward and an egotist. Chris McClandiss is thought by some to be an idealistic reckless youth.
First off all, Why, I asked, would Chris take photos of himself if he planned to rough it for the sake of roughing it? ... " I saw Chris as a poseur.
