The most obvious and direct display of guilt in The Scarlet Letter is the scarlet letter itself. The cloth letter “A,” which is made by Hester, was a symbol of her guilt over her crime of adultery. “On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread appeared the letter A”(p. ... The main purpose of the letter was to symbolize the dark sin of adultery and its dreadful effects on Hester. “The scarlet letter was her [Hester’s] passport into regions where other woman dared not tread. ... The letter takes a toll on Hester and represents not only her guilt of the crime, but the horrifying effects that it has on her.
