Pro-life/Pro-choice
According to Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, abortion is defined as being the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus. ... There are three main points of conflict between those that are pro-life and those that are pro-choice. ... " (1) For pro-lifers and pro-choicers, the definition of when human personhood begins is very different.
They both agree that an ovum alone is a form of life but not a human person and that a spermatozoa alone is also a form of life but also not a human person. Both groups agree that at or shortly after conception, a fertilized ovum is a form of life, an embryo is a form of life, a newborn baby is a form of life, that a newborn baby is a human person and that when human personhood begins, an abortion should not be allowed except in extreme situations(1). The disagreement begins with pro-lifers believing that immediately following conception a human being with a soul is created and most pro-choicers believing it happens later in the pregnancy.
Many of pro-lifers’ beliefs are founded in their religion which teaches that a soul enters the just fertilized egg at the instant of conception. ... Another pro-life argument is that after conception, a unique DNA chain is created that will define the baby as a human being for the rest of its life. ... Many pro-choicers believe that, since the fertilized ovum doesn’t have limbs; no brain; no ability to think, reason or sense its own environment, it is not yet human.
