In the early Republic of our nation two forces were dominant; those two forces were Nationalism and Sectionalism. Nationalism is the sense of national consciousness, placing primary interest and emphasis on the promotion of the nation. On the other hand Sectionalism is the devotion of interest to a certain region or state, placing interest in local affairs rather than national ones. These two forces dominated and influenced our nations republic and still continue to show influences in politics today.
