Symbolism in Emily Dickinson’s “Because I Could not Stop for Death” and “I Felt a Funeral in My Brain”
Emily Dickinson’s poems “Because I Could not Stop for Death” and “I Felt a Funeral in My Brain” deal with one of life’s uncertainties, death. Death is the supreme unknown that we naturally fear. This is obviously the way Emily Dickinson felt. In her poem “Because I Could not Stop for Death”, death is portrayed as a gentleman who comes to give the persona a ride to eternity. ... (755) The poem is full of imagery and symbolism and she makes death seem slow and pleasant. Dickinson uses symbolism to help the readers understand the meaning she is trying to convey. “The Carriage held but just Ourselves-And Immortality” The carriage is symbolic of a hearse and carries the persona who is symbolized as humanity and her suitor who is symbolized as death.
