Zeus This is a statue of the Greek God known as Zeus, the god of the sky and ruler of the Olympian gods. This statue dates back to the Classical Period somewhere between 460 BCE and 440 BCE, this time is also known as the high point of Greek art. This is obviously a replica of the original statue due to its material. The original, which was probably stolen, was most likely made of bronze. The statue stands alone at about 6’10’’ to 7’ tall and being that bronze is a lighter and more malleable metal the artist was able to use what is called contrapposto, or a shift in weight. As it turns out, the Roman’s had an extreme interest in Greek art. Although, it is unlikely that the replica they might have produced would have exactly mimicked the first statue. Only because the Roman’s frequently worked with marble, and without a trunk or other form of support, the statue would be unable to stand alone due to its weight. The Greeks believed that humans were the closest thing to perfection and that is why their statues are of human beings.
