Investigation into the factors affecting the rate of transpiration

Aim

Investigation into the factors affecting the rate of transpiration.

Preliminary plan

Before doing the actual experiment we will be doing a preliminary investigation to make sure the apparatus we are using the pedometer is correctly working and also that we know what is to be done for the actual experiment. From this preliminary test we will know what improvement we should make for the investigation next time.

In this experiment we will put one stem of leaves into the pedometer for 10 minutes and we will be see how fast the transpiration is occurring as after each minute we will be measuring how far the bubble has gone.

The dependant variables we will consider is light because the more light the faster transpiration occurs, temperature because the warmer it is transpiration occurs quicker and the surface of the leaf because bigger leaves transpire more water quickly than smaller leaves.

The independent variable is the rate of water loss as we will be measure how fast the water transpires up the tube after each minute.

Preliminary Prediction

The more leaves are on the stem the faster transpiration will occur as more leafs are in in need for the water.

Apparatus

Plant with different sized leaves – So we could use surface area as a factor affecting transpiration for the experiment. ...

Rubber tube – This is put into the capillary tube so then the plant can be place firmly

Stop clock – To help us measure the bubbles exactly after every minute. ...      We then put the end of the plant leaves into the rubber tubing, which was also attached to the capillary tube.
