1984, by George Orwell, takes place in an imaginary future where a totalitarian government controls every aspect of the life of the people of Oceania. The government is referred to as the Party and its leader is Big Brother. The main character is Winston Smith, a thirty-nine year old man who lives in London. He hates the party, but he can never show it or speak out against it. If he does, he will be shot. He rebels in one of the only ways he can, by writing in a diary that reveals his rebellious thoughts. By keeping a diary like this, he knows he will one day be found out by the Thought Police and probably killed. Winston often visits the “proles”, the lowest social class of Oceania. They are allowed to live without surveillance, but are very poor and work in factories, living in run down neighborhoods.
