There are many scenes where Vincent is frantically scrubbing himself loose of debris in the incinerator. The music in this scene is the main theme song for Gattaca. This theme song is written in a minor key, an effect that instantly suggests something unhappy or depressed. The theme has a main melody which is repeated several times all played on lush multi-layered strings, soft brasses all at a very slow tempo. This repetition of melody along with the repetition of Vincent cleaning process is in no doubt what helps positions the viewer to feel sympathy towards the character of Vincent. The colour blue fills the incinerator. The colour blue suggests cleansing, freshness and water. The colour blue may be present in the absence of the water from a shower. The downstairs room is a main focus in the film Gattaca.
