For most people, transformations occur over a matter of years, or even decades, in A Separate Peace Gene goes through very noticeable transformations over a matter of months. In the beginning of the book, Gene Forrester was intelligent, thoughtful, competitive, and a second-rate athlete. He does not like big displays of emotion, just like most people at Devon, the prep school he attends. Gene has a best friend; Finny, who seems to be the exact opposite of Gene. Finny is handsome, very popular, and the best athlete in the school. The summer of 1942 shows Gene to be very meek yet paranoid he gives the idea that he wants Finny’s life from him based on Gene’s jealousy. The accident of the summer session of 1942 radically changes how Gene will live his everyday life forever. At the end of the book in year 1943 Gene changes into a mature young man by overcoming feelings like petty jealousy, and hatred this transition starts when he finds out Finny's sports career is destroyed.
