A text can create a particular relationship between the real writer and the real reader by constructing a piece of fictional discourse between implied versions of themselves:

If you have difficulty understanding the difference between the real audience and the implied one, then think about the following analogies: TV adverts for washing powder show women (‘implied readers’) as people whose lives revolve around the quality of their washing.
