School District Analysis of Principal using the 7 steps to Effective Leadership model

INTRODUCTION:          The school is located in the North West corner of the city it serves; where apartments and older bungalow style homes are located in an area the locals call the “flats”. ... Enrollment for this year is upwards to 1300 for a school that designed to house a much smaller population, this creates several problems. There is no gymnasium or adequate space to hold school wide events, even the lunches are two periods. ... 7% is Asian. Over 550 students receive benefits from the Title 1 program school, serving subsidized breakfast and lunch programs and an after-school intervention program. ... In addition to the typical offerings of a junior high we have an “in-house suspension” room, Band, Choir and after school sports. ...                          The school has 63 certificated teachers, 35 classified staff, 2 part-time Speech Therapist, 1 counselor, 2 assistant principals and a Principal. The current principal has been at the school for five years. ... His duties include: Organizational oversight, new teacher support, curriculum and staff development, school budget, plant management, public relations, master schedule development, all special activities, articulation program end of the year activities and graduation. The assistant principal’s duties include: Discipline of one grade level, supervision of three academic departments, a variety of liaisons with outside resources, attendance at IEP meetings, campus and athletic event supervision and assessment of the teaching staff. ...
CURRENT INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP PRACTICES ASSESSMENT:
Step One: Academic Standards
Academic Standards Indicator 1. ... The Principal requires that each classroom teacher posts the standards being covered in a student friendly format on a daily basis. ... The Principal facilitates communication through each department chairman from their attendance at the Principals Council. ...                     I do not believe that improvements made would be any more effective. ... There is a pretty strong resistance to being told how to teach, but most have accepted that the district and principal are requiring compliance of covering the standards and do so in their teaching methodologies. ... There seems to be an attitude that these students aren’t as capable as students at other school sites within the district. ...           I believe that this is an area that would benefit from more involvement by an Instructional leader but not necessarily the current Principal. He came up through the ranks of PE/Coach and runs the school within a more traditional and structured approach. He appears awkward in his abilities to offer teaching suggestions and focuses on supervisory duties before school, during snack and at lunch. ...
Step Three: Create a School Culture and Climate Conducive to Learning
After reviewing all of the Indicators in this step, I couldn’t decide which one to select and ranked all of the indicators at Level 1. ... Examples of how this may work in a variety of learning situations are as follows:
•     Allow all students who dress in school colors to attend a 20 minute Spirit Day Pep Rally. Do not refer to qualifications other than the fact that the student wore school colors. ...
Step Four: Communicates the Vision and Mission of Your School
Indicator 4. ... The principal has embraced technology and is the only junior high in the district to have a fully functioning website. ... When it was time to set our annual goals, the principal sent out an email with the form attached. ... The principal is responsible for all new teachers and he sent each of us an email on when he’d like to meet. ...                                         This is another area that could be improved with more involvement by the principal. ... As a new teacher to this school, I believe he should allocate his supervisory duties to others at a minimum of once or twice a week and use that time to invite each of the new teachers out for a quick lunch or coffee during their prep time.
