Dark Tone

The early 1600’s was said to be a dark and depressing time period. ... One of his most grotesque plays out of the many that he has written, is said to be Macbeth: a story of a loyal man that gets caught up in jealousy and guilt. Blood and gore were extremely entertaining for audiences during Shakespeare’s time, which is probably why he went to the extreme when setting a gloomy tone in the play Macbeth. His initiative to have this dark tone in his play is obvious through the order of the scenes, his choice of words, and the abnormal events that occur. ... ) Still Shakespeare is trying to build up a gloomy mood within the audience by mentioning “dark” words like foul, fog, and filthy. William Shakespeare’s decision to open Macbeth with three witches was a good way to foretell his audience the tone this play will be based around.

After Shakespeare introduced how the tone of Macbeth was going to be through the conversation between the three witches, he needed to sustain the dark tone through his choice of words. ... ) Many believe Macbeth is one of the bloodiest plays ever written, but this is only because he chose to mention the word “blood” constantly throughout the play.
