Why did the Chesapeake and New England differentiate by the 1700s? As colonial pioneers began settling in the New World around 1700, two very distinct societies formed between the Chesapeake region and New England. These two regions were comprised primarily of English settlers from the Old World and as they evolved the structures of the societies grew different. The colonists who first came to New England came to escape religions persecution from the churches of England. Using data from Document B we can see that most of the colonists were entire families. It appears that whole towns moved form the Old World to the New World to escape the persecution and practice their own religions.
