The book Frankenstein depicts the struggle of man for acceptance into mainstream society with the obstruction of adverse, outwardly appearances. Victor Frankenstein’s creation, when introduced, is shunned from his creator. The reasons for Frankenstein’s contempt towards his “son” is unknown to the creature, and as would be with any human sole, created much confusion. To add to the confusion, every instance of human contact the creature encountered created chaos and fear. But why, he did not know. The creature had no parent, no guardian, no one to explain to him that he was grotesquely different. This, he was bound to discover on his own. Like an abandoned child left to the streets, Frankenstein’s creation was destined to wander the world and learn to survive on his own. Shortly after his recluse into the woods, the creature discovers what will eventually be his library of knowledge: the cottagers. The importance of the cottagers cannot be overstated. Essentially, the cottagers act as the adopted parents of Frankenstein’s creation; for, the fabric of his identity is sewn through the experiences he clandestinely shares with them. When the creature first encounters the family, the experience serves to develop emotions, and for the first time, the reader is shown that the creature really does possess the humanistic qualities of all man kind. He shows an extreme curiosity for the daily events that the cottagers undergo and the means of which they go about doing their chores. Watching them gives him tremendous joy. “Night quickly shut in; but, to my extreme wonder, I found that the cottagers had a means of prolonging light, by the use of tapers, and was delighted to find, that the setting of the sun did not put an end to the pleasure I experienced in watching my human neighbors” (Shelley, 73.) This was the foundation that set the stage for many other emotions to surface within the creature.
