In Joan Didions eassay On Morality, she speaks of the preconcieved idea that most Americans have on the idea of what
constitutes morality or immorality. ... In the opening sentences of the essay She presents
to the readers the topic of her essay, that is to define morality in an abstract way.
Didion begins by detailing the story of an automobile accident that occured nearby and then shows how begins to show how it
demonstrates aspects of morality The idea is that she starts by showing the mental and physical landscape where she is
writing. ... This seems
to be the first area where Didion begins to really question the idea of "one true morality".
Later in the essay again Didion explains that morality might not be as objective as it is normally though of. ... Didion then, in stark
contrast, draws an allusion to Christ and claimed he used morality to justify his actions. The authors idea here of course is to show that
the concept of morality varies greatly between individuals. ... This beggining eases the reader into
reflection about deeper things, like morality. ...
Finally, the first person narrative that the author uses also lends itself to a much easier to contemplate view of morality. ...
However becomes of the timeless example used and the excellent writing style employed her argument for subjective morality can still
be understood quite clearly by many people of all backgrounds to this day.
