Catcher in the Rye In the “Catcher in the Rye”, by J.D. Salinger, we go on an odyssey with Holden Caulfield. He is a 16 year-old boy that has just dropped out of Pency Academy, run away from home, and is undergoing treatment at some kind of medical facility. Holden is very cynical, immature, and inexperienced about life, which is evident throughout the story. Holden’s main goal in the story is to resist the process of growing up. He wants everything to be easily understandable and eternally fixed. He is frightened because he is guilty of the sins he criticizes in others, and because he can't understand everything around him, yet he refuses to acknowledge this fear.
