gender discrimination

Gender Discrimination - A curse to our society

My synthesis is based on two essays which are taken from The Prentice Hall Reader. ... The writers of both the stories stress on gender discrimination and how it has discouraged women from pursuing their aims goal in life. ... She uses her essay as a tool to help boost the self esteem of female athletes and to fight discrimination especially on gender grounds. ... She uses herself as an example by telling us that in spite of everything that happened, she continued in sports in order to further motivate and support girls to fight gender discrimination. ... She however, supports the law that made gender discrimination illegal and believes that this law has made athletes of millions of girls.
In her essay “Academic Selves,” Phifer feels that each gender has its own communication style. ... Phifer feels that “they emerge from adolescence with a diminished sense of their worth as individuals” (273), which basically explains that gender discrimination is not the only cause of fading academic standards. ... She used the study released by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), entitled ‘How Schools Shortage Girls’ which basically provides statistics on discrimination in class rooms between boys and girls. Just like Haywood Leslie’s work, Phifer too tries to persuade and make the readers more aware about gender discrimination. In the second half of her essay, she drifts from discrimination to other causes that account for an academic decline. ... They both mentioned that public awareness of the discrimination is now increasing. ... The purpose of both the essays is to try and make people aware of the gender discrimination that our society has to face everyday. ... The two writers strive for equality between both the genders by expressing their own views on discrimination.
