recruitment in the scottish police force

The organisation we have chosen to look at is the Scottish Police Force, which is obviously part of the much larger UK police force. The Scottish police force has a long and proud tradition of service to the community, and is renowned throughout the world for its efficiency, fairness and support. A police officer in Scotland today shares in that tradition and has the satisfaction of dealing with people, protecting them and earning their respect. The work of the police can be best described as maintaining law and order, protecting members of the public and their property, preventing crime and investigating crime committed against the community. ...

The Scottish Police force is broken down into eight areas: Central Scotland Police; Dumfries and Galloway Police; Fife Constabulary; Grampian Police; Lothian and Borders Police; Northern Constabulary; Strathclyde Police and Tayside Police.

The aims of the Scottish Police Force are highlighted in their mission statement which reads:

“Our purpose is to address the concerns and expectations of communities, and to tackle those activities which erode the quality of life and general wellbeing of the public. ... The Northern Constabulary, the most northerly Police Force in the United Kingdom, covers one sixth of the land mass of Great Britain encompassing the areas served by the Highland Council, Shetland Islands Council, Orkney Islands Council and the Western Isles Council. The Force covers an area of some 15,000 square miles and has a resident population in the region of 278,000.

Policing such a diverse area is not easy and in order to shorten lines of communication and increase the accountability of senior managers, the force has been organised into 15 service units, comprising of 8 area commands and six support functions. ... The Heads of the 15 service units are directly accountable to the Force executive but enjoy a considerable amount of devolved autonomy in their day to day work.

RECRUITMENT:

Within the police force the Human Resources (HR) Service Unit deals with personnel, recruitment, training, employee development, welfare and health and safety issues. ... Although as indicated here the HR department has a number of responsibilities one of the most important aspects, as with any organisation, involves the recruitment of staff.

The Scottish police service has an active positive discrimination recruitment policy due to concerns relating to the under-representation of women and ethnic minorities. The Uk police force serves a multi-coloured society in which all citizens have similar rights and so it is clear that the service needs a mix of police officers that reflect the community as a whole. For example Strathclyde police under its ‘better balanced’ policy is working together with community groups to encourage more women applicants and those from black and minority ethnic communities.

All applicants who satisfy the basic entry requirements and who have the personal qualities that are needed to become a successful police officer will be invited to sit the standard entrance exam which is made up of four parts: listening comprehension, data interpretation, calculation and number work and reading comprehension.
