Minorities in Film
Most films that tell a story of a struggling minority, trying to make it in society, usually take one of two routes in their approach. The stories where the minority stands out immediately either because of skin color, sex or a behavioral difference are one of the common themes. These films are usually very clear-cut in how they play out. The characters take their positions right away, either passively, in support of, or against assisting the minority character in their struggle. In the other common themes the minority character doesn’t visually stand out amongst the other characters. These films aren’t so clear-cut. Usually, the other characters take a liking to the minority character and accept them as one of their own. The minority character can take many different approaches to how they will handle their minority status amongst the other characters. “School Ties,” demonstrates just how David Greene’s choice to conceal his religious identity can turn out to have more of a negative impact in the long run.
