In an article by K, Jeevan Kumar, Samuel Beckett’s Endgame is thoroughly analyzed. For Beckett, the metaphor was first used in his play Murphy. Kumar argues that the chess metaphor focuses on the struggle with time. Time is indefinite for a chess game. This idea is used in Endgame many times when Hamm is trying to delay the end. ... Using the chess metaphor it is clear why Hamm can never be in the center of the room. ... On a chess board there is no square in the direct center therefore it is impossible to be in the center of the board.
