E B White Once More on the lake

... They remember the most definite details of this cherished memory but as
time goes on these places begin to change, and what once seemed familiar can become as
unknown as a person is to death. ... This is what E.B. White writes about
in Once More on the Lake.
Every August White and his family vacationed at a lake in Maine. This lake quickly
became Whites favorite childhood memory and as he got older he thought about it all the time.
Once he had a son he decided to take him to this lake, and see just how much has changed. ...
“Sometimes in summer there are days when the restlessness of the tides and the fearful
cold of the sea water and the incessant wind which blows across the afternoon and into the
evening make me wish for the placidity of a lake in the woods.” As E.B. White describes his
feelings towards his present living environment, he introduces the thought of revisiting his
favorite childhood playground; a lake in Maine. Since White moved near the ocean, he was not
able to raise his son to see all the luxuries of nature near that sacred lake. So the first week in
August(just like when he was a child), White went back to the lake, only this time he brought his
son. ... ” White wanted his son to experience all that he had as a child at that
lake in Maine, he wanted him to see nature first hand. ... ” E.B. White
goes to the lake wanting to see what has changed from his childhood. ... ” Throughout his time visiting this lake,
White begins to see what has not changed at all. ...
White proceeds the story by telling just how similar the lake was now compared to his
childhood, as well as noting a few minor differences.
The atmosphere at the lake remained the same throughout the years. The dragonflies
hovering around the fishing pole, the smell of the cabin as White awoke in the morning and the
violent thunderstorms. ... ” Not only were the
natural aspects of the lake the same, but the store as well as the restaurant and it’s waitresses
were the same as well.
Though, as expected not everything at the lake had stayed the same through the years.
The soft nightly sounds of the lake were interrupted now by the roar of car engines.
